Tether to relaunch USDT on Bitcoin via RGB protocol

Overview

Tether is preparing to relaunch its USDT stablecoin on the Bitcoin network in October 2026. This move marks a return to the Bitcoin blockchain following the discontinuation of its previous Omni Layer implementation approximately three years ago.

The expansion involves two primary technical paths: connecting USDT to Bitcoin’s base layer and the Lightning Network, and utilizing the RGB protocol. The RGB implementation is being managed by Utexo, a startup that recently secured $7.5 million in seed funding co-led by Tether.

By using the RGB protocol’s client-side validation, Tether aims to enhance privacy by keeping most payment details off the public ledger. This mechanism anchors proof of ownership to the Bitcoin network’s UTXO set, ensuring that only the existence of a transaction is visible on the blockchain.

This initiative is intended to provide new tools and APIs for exchanges, wallet services, and payment processors. While this introduces a third, architecturally distinct channel for USDT, Tether does not plan to withdraw support from existing networks. Currently, over 90% of the $184 billion USDT supply is held on the TRON and Ethereum networks, and the Bitcoin integration is intended to serve as a new network option rather than a replacement.
