Thai methamphetamine trafficking crackdown

In early August 2026 Thai authorities intensified a crackdown on methamphetamine trafficking linked to the Golden Triangle. On 1 August, the Narcotics Suppression Police uncovered a massive cache of about 8 million meth pills hidden in a cemetery in Chiang Rai, tracing the supply to a production site in Shan State, Myanmar, and a smuggling route through Laos. The operation highlighted the involvement of a fugitive drug lord and the coordination between border rangers and police.

A few days later, on 5 August, police seized nearly 3 million tablets in two separate raids: a teenager in Lampang was stopped with 808 tablets, and a truck in Thung Song, Nakhon Si Thammarat, was found carrying about 1.4 million tablets concealed in fertilizer sacks. The combined seizures underscored the expanded, multi‑regional effort to disrupt the trafficking network.

Together, the incidents illustrate a sustained, high‑profile enforcement push across northern and southern Thailand aimed at dismantling large‑scale meth supply chains.
