Thailand flooding and industrial disruption

Overview

Severe flooding in Thailand, particularly affecting Bangkok and surrounding provinces, has caused widespread industrial and logistical disruptions. Initial reports indicated that the automotive sector faced significant setbacks, with Toyota suspending production at four facilities and Honda halting motorcycle production in Rayong. The aviation sector also experienced flight cancellations and cargo suspensions at Suvarnabhumi Airport due to staff being unable to commute.

As the situation progressed, the Federation of Thai Industries estimated industrial damages at least 1.018 billion baht. While some manufacturing plants avoided direct flooding, production remained hindered by the inability of employees to reach workplaces and the disruption of ‘just-in-time’ supply chains. Honda specifically halted operations at plants in Prachinburi and Ayutthaya due to parts shortages from suppliers in flood-affected areas like Chonburi and Rayong. Companies have indicated plans to recover lost production through overtime once conditions stabilize.
