Thailand immigration and deportation enforcement

Overview

Thailand has introduced new regulations to accelerate the deportation of foreign nationals who violate laws or threaten public order. Signed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the Prime Minister’s Office Regulation on Deportation B.E. 2569 targets individuals involved in illegal entry, unauthorized work, illegal business operations, and document forgery. It also mandates deportation for those convicted of crimes carrying prison sentences of five years or more.

To streamline these processes, correctional authorities must notify the Interior Ministry of qualifying foreign inmates at least 15 days before release. While deportees are generally returned to their country of nationality, the rules allow for transfers to safe third countries if the individual faces risks of torture or inhumane treatment at home.

In conjunction with these measures, Thailand has adjusted visa-free entry durations for citizens of 60 countries, reducing the permitted stay from 60 days to 30 days effective September 15. These actions occur alongside intensified regional efforts to combat foreign criminal activity, such as Myanmar’s implementation of an Anti-Cyber Fraud Law.
