Thailand online gambling crackdown

The Thai government initiated a large-scale crackdown on illegal online gambling, specifically targeting activities linked to the World Cup. Between June and July 2023, authorities seized 4,576 websites, resulting in the recovery of over 20.46 billion baht in betting turnover. The operation led to thousands of arrests and the seizure of weapons and ammunition. In response, the government announced the creation of the Anti-Online Gambling Centre (AOGC) to coordinate efforts between the National Police, the Bank of Thailand, and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to monitor illegal promotions and disrupt financial flows.

Subsequent enforcement actions included the arrest of a ‘super-admin’ in Nakhon Pathom who managed the financial systems for eleven major gambling brands. This network processed at least 5 million baht daily using both Thai baht and cryptocurrencies. Investigations revealed that the suspect had received training in Poipet, Cambodia, and returned to Thailand to manage backend systems following increased crackdowns in Cambodia. Authorities are continuing to trace international financial flows to identify the organizers of these networks.
