Thailand PDPC regulatory guidance and certification

Overview

The Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) has taken steps to clarify and elevate data protection standards in Thailand.

Initially, the PDPC addressed public concerns regarding the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and residential security. Secretary-General Surapong Plengkham clarified that installing CCTV at private residences for personal or household activities is exempt from the PDPA under Section 4 (1). While homeowners may use cameras to protect property or gather legal evidence, the committee advised caution when recording individuals on public streets.

Subsequently, the PDPC shifted focus toward organizational accountability through the promotion of the ‘PDPC Certification Mark’. This initiative encourages companies to move beyond basic legal compliance by implementing verifiable security measures and processes. To support this, the committee scheduled an executive talk in Bangkok to educate leaders and Data Protection Officers on using standardized data management to enhance corporate credibility and mitigate digital economy risks.
