Inbound tourism reached over 22.18 million foreign visitors between January 1 and September 19, generating approximately 1.08 trillion baht in revenue. While this total represents a 3.67% decrease compared to the previous year, recent weekly data shows a recovery in short-haul markets, driven by holidays in Malaysia and Japan. China remains the largest source market for visitors to Thailand.

Simultaneously, Thai outbound travel has reached record levels. Last year, 13.06 million Thai citizens traveled abroad, an 11.4% increase from the prior year, accompanied by a 29.5% rise in overseas spending totaling over 559 billion baht. China was the most popular destination, attracting 3.06 million visitors who spent 120.25 billion baht; Bnomics, a research platform by Bangkok Bank, attributed this to visa-free entry, infrastructure, and value for money. Malaysia ranked second with 1.72 million visitors, followed by Laos with 1.44 million, a trend supported by the Laos-China railway. Japan ranked fourth with 1.23 million visitors, noted for higher average spending per person, while the United Kingdom rounded out the top five.

To bolster inbound sectors, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has set a goal to attract 1.05 million Japanese visitors by 2026. Despite challenges like a weak yen and rising fuel surcharges, TAT aims to capture high-value travelers through wellness, culture, and sustainable tourism, with projected revenue from Japanese tourists reaching between 42 billion and 44 billion baht this year.
