Thailand-UK cannabis smuggling investigation

Overview

Legal proceedings have emerged regarding international cannabis smuggling operations involving travel between Thailand and the United Kingdom.

In one case, Patrick O’Driscoll, 30, of Cardiff, pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to conspiring to fraudulently evade a prohibition on the importation of a Class B drug. This investigation follows a June incident where Thai authorities arrested two 17-year-olds suspected of acting as couriers while attempting to travel from Thailand to the UK with 64kg of cannabis. Other defendants in this matter, including Levi Coomansing, 20, and Gareth Press, 42, have pleaded not guilty to charges including drug smuggling and conspiring to arrange travel for the purpose of exploitation involving three young people. Additionally, Jessica Sani, Ffion Bowes-Cavanagh Hooley, and Carrie-Anne Dreyer have denied charges related to cannabis smuggling and exploitation.

In a separate but related operation, authorities intercepted 11 individuals traveling from Thailand to Birmingham Airport via Paris. Border Force officers seized approximately 460kg of vacuum-packed cannabis concealed in 22 suitcases. The smuggling attempt was valued at £13.8 million. Paige Crisp was sentenced to 30 months in prison, while several other individuals received sentences between 24 and 32 months. The National Crime Agency described the operation as involving “extensive planning and highly coordinated travel arrangements.”
