Thailand-US reciprocal trade negotiations

Overview

Thailand and the United States have moved toward a reciprocal trade agreement (ART) to protect Thai export competitiveness and jobs.

Initial negotiations focused on addressing U.S. investigations into structural overcapacity and ensuring fair tariff rates for Thai goods. These discussions were aimed at safeguarding a market valued at 2.37 trillion baht.

Following meetings in Washington between Thai Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the two nations reached a consensus. The agreement resolves issues related to Section 301 investigations concerning forced labor and structural overproduction. Under the new framework, the total import tariff burden on Thai products will be capped at a maximum of 19 percent, a significant reduction from the potential 36 percent previously facing Thai exporters. In exchange, Thailand has committed to increasing imports of energy, aircraft, and agricultural products from the United States, as well as increasing investments in the U.S.
