Overview

In July 2026, Thailand and Malaysia moved to fast‑track a defence‑cooperation memorandum, widening joint activities, supporting local defence industries, and bolstering border security, while also backing Thailand’s Southern peace dialogue.

By August 2026, Thailand’s security partnerships expanded further. On 4 August, Indonesia and Thailand signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement in Jakarta. This agreement, signed by Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Thai Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Adul Boonthumjaroen, includes coordinated patrols, joint special‑forces training, personnel exchanges, and defence industry collaboration to preserve the stability of the Malacca Strait.

Simultaneously, Malaysia and Thailand intensified efforts to combat cross-border crime through government-to-government and police-to-police mechanisms. This includes intelligence sharing and joint operations involving police forces from Perlis, Kedah, and Kelantan. Additionally, maritime security in the region was bolstered by trilateral exercises in the Riau Islands involving Indonesia’s Bakamla, Malaysia’s Maritime Enforcement Agency, and the Singapore Police Coast Guard, focusing on maritime safety and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) training.
