Veteran broadcaster Gretel Killeen returned to Australian television as the presenter of the 2026 edition of "The Traitors," a reality‑competition series filmed in a New Zealand manor. The show pits former contestants from various Australian reality programmes against each other, with hidden "traitors" trying to eliminate the "faithful" players for a cash prize.

A few days later the season launched early on streaming platforms. In the opening episode Olympian and former "Australian Survivor" winner Shane Gould was forced to vote a fellow contestant out before any players entered the manor, resulting in the swift elimination of MasterChef alumnus Cam Merchant. The episode was promoted at Instagram’s Sydney headquarters, where Killeen hosted the event. The cast featured a notable LGBTQIA+ presence, including drag performer Kween Kong, comedian Rhys Nicholson and chef Alvin Quah, underscoring the show's emphasis on diversity.

Later in August, Killeen’s on‑screen persona grew more theatrical, with the host emerging from a coffin and adopting high‑camp styling reminiscent of U.S. and U.K. versions. The third season added new celebrity and semi‑celebrity participants such as the son of singer John Farnham, former Idol contestant Cosima De Vito, and former Bachelor stars Alex Nation and Keira Maguire. Killeen emphasized that the Australian edition has its own identity and a distinct tone, aiming to revive interest after earlier low ratings while maintaining the blend of strategic gameplay and psychological drama.
