The X-Files R-rated director's cut

In July 2026 Disney announced a R‑rated director’s cut of the 2008 film *The X‑Files: I Want to Believe* to mark the 30‑year anniversary, slated for release on 14 August on Disney+ and Hulu. The cut, retitled *The X‑Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn* (Russian for “Victor Frankenstein”), restores horror‑focused scenes removed for the original PG‑13 theatrical version. A trailer and poster were unveiled, and creator Chris Carter said the version presents the darker vision he originally intended.

On 4 August 2026 it was confirmed the cut will stream on Disney+ and Hulu on 14 August, alongside the original theatrical version. The release features the original leads David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, with supporting actors Billy Connolly, Amanda Peet and Mitch Pileggi. The new material adds graphic violence and a tone inspired by the real‑life Dr. Frankenstein, fulfilling Carter’s promise to show the previously unseen violent and frightening elements.
