Greek authorities have moved the long‑delayed Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) redevelopment into an active implementation phase. On 29 July 2026, the Thessaloniki municipal council approved a 99‑year free lease of roughly 12.36 ha to DETH‑HELEXPO AE and the Hellenic Participation and Property Company. The €204.6 million gross project aims to create a 120‑hectare Metropolitan Park, two new bioclimatic exhibition halls, a renovated Ioannis Vellidis conference centre, and underground parking for over 1,000 cars. The project has transitioned from a public‑private partnership to a fully public scheme, dropping previous plans for a hotel and business centre in favor of a greener layout. This new design preserves iconic structures such as the Esso Pappas building, MOMus, and the Palais de Sports, with green and open space covering approximately 70% of the site. Funding is provided through the Development Programme for Public Investments under the National Development Programme (EPA 2026‑2030). On 5 August 2026, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met Mayor Stelios Aggeloudis and Interior Minister Thodoris Livanis, reaffirming confidence that the new fair will be operational by 2030 while the existing venue remains in use. On 7 August 2026, the Project Preparation Facility published the formal tender for the redevelopment. Following this, Deputy Minister of Interior Konstantinos P. Gioulekas met with the new Chairman of DEITH-Helexpo, Christos Tsentemeidis, to assess progress and ensure the center remains fully operational throughout the construction phases. Submissions for the tender are due by 11:00 a.m. on 21 September 2026. On 19 August 2026, Deputy Minister Gioulekas met again with Helexpo Board Chairman Christos Tsemetidis to discuss the modernization of the exhibition center, which includes the construction of two contemporary buildings totaling 40,500 square meters. The officials reiterated that the center will remain fully operational during the construction of the new facilities and the Metropolitan Park.
