Infrastructure development in Thessaloniki ~~is progressing~~ continues through ~~both~~ new construction and facility upgrades. The Western Thessaloniki Suburban Railway project, which includes connecting the Thessaloniki Port Authority's 6th Pier to the national network, is nearing the contractor selection stage. Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Giorgos Kotsiras announced that the technical evaluation of two bids for this project is nearing completion. The government intends to sign a contract in 2026, with construction projected to last 36 months. Kotsiras noted that Thessaloniki is a central focus of government transportation initiatives. Beyond the suburban railway, ongoing improvements include the expansion of the Thessaloniki Metro toward Kalamaria, the introduction of 50 new electric buses to the city's fleet, and upgrades to the tram system. Additionally, broader railway upgrades in Northern Greece are targeting the Thessaloniki–Sidirokastro, Mouriés–Promachonas, and Alexandroupoli–Ormenio lines to strengthen international connections. Similar fleet renewal efforts, including 125 new buses, are also underway in Attica. Simultaneously, the New Railway Station of Thessaloniki is set for a 1.5 million euro renovation. Following a donation agreement between Hellenic Train and METLEN, works will focus on upgrading passenger service areas, including the central hall, ticket offices, and lighting. The project also prioritizes accessibility through the installation of a lift for persons with disabilities and the renovation of sanitary facilities. Construction for the station renovation is scheduled to begin on September 10, 2026, with completion expected by January 25, 2027. Looking toward broader strategic shifts, Kostas Kyranakis, Secretary of the New Democracy party, highlighted a new approach to utilizing Greek railway real estate. During the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, GAIOSE S.A. rebranded as ‘Hellenic Rail Estate’. Kyranakis emphasized that major hubs like Thessaloniki, Athens, and Piraeus are poised to become significant landmarks.
