Thessaly regional tourism and development initiatives
Overview
Regional authorities in Thessaly are implementing strategic initiatives to bolster tourism and economic development.
In early October 2026, the Regional Governor of Thessaly initiated a proposal for an Integrated Territorial Investment titled ‘Mountainous Trikala 365’. This plan, targeting the 2028–2034 period, seeks investments exceeding 20 million euros to connect the city of Trikala with surrounding mountainous areas like Meteora, Pyli, and Farkaodona through enhanced hiking trails and regional networking.
This follows the Thessaly Regional Council’s approval of a 1.6 million euro Strategic Tourism Promotion and Development Plan for 2027–2028. The strategy aims to transform the region into a sustainable, year-round destination by leveraging its natural landscapes and culture. Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism Natasa Adamopoulou noted that while visitor numbers rose 4.3% in 2025, the new strategy focuses on increasing the average length of stay to maximize economic impact on local communities.
