Threats against Santiago universities

Overview

Security concerns have risen in Santiago following a series of threats targeting higher education institutions. In late August, the Chilean Investigative Police (PDI) arrested a 22-year-old man in the Lo Espejo district after he issued threats via email and social media. The suspect, identified online as ‘Amermelao’, claimed intentions to carry out massacres at several universities, including Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Universidad Diego Portales, and Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano. These threats led several institutions to suspend in-person activities.

Shortly after, a 19-year-old student was arrested for a bomb threat directed at the University of Chile’s Department of Computer Science. The threat was posted on Instagram, stating, ‘On Monday I am going to put a bomb in the DCC, first and only warning.’ Authorities identified the suspect through Meta Platforms’ early detection protocols. The Cybercrime Brigade seized electronic devices during a raid in Estación Central. The suspect faces judicial measures including travel restrictions and a prohibition from entering the threatened academic unit.
