Thunderbolt 5 hardware market expansion
Overview
The Thunderbolt 5 hardware market is expanding with new peripheral solutions for professional and workstation users.
Initially, Other World Computing (OWC) announced a Thunderbolt 5 ecosystem, which included a dual HDMI 2.1 docking station capable of supporting dual 4K 240Hz or dual 8K 60Hz displays, and a 1.5m USB-C cable supporting up to 120Gbps asymmetric data transfers.
Following these announcements, Sonnet introduced the Breakaway Box 850 T5, an external GPU enclosure for Windows 11 computers that supports Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, and USB4. Concurrently, OWC released its Thunderbolt 5 Dock, which supports up to three 8K displays and provides 140W of power delivery, noting that full bandwidth utilization requires hardware such as an M4 Pro chip or better.
