Tijuana industrial sustainability and infrastructure growth

Industrial sectors in Tijuana are focusing on sustainability and infrastructure development to support economic growth and regional competitiveness.

Initial efforts have centered on resource efficiency and waste management. Companies are adopting strategies to reduce energy and water consumption, such as producing ‘green aluminum’ from secondary materials. Additionally, organizations like Canacintra Tijuana, in coordination with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), are providing training on hazardous waste management and regulatory compliance to prevent environmental contamination.

To sustain industrial expansion and attract investment, the region is prioritizing large-scale infrastructure projects. This includes the development of desalination plants to ensure water availability and the rehabilitation of aging wastewater pumping plants by the Tijuana State Public Services Commission (CESPT). These sanitation projects, supported by NADBank and the US EPA, are part of international agreements under the International Boundary and Water Commission (CILA) to improve cross-border sanitation and are expected to benefit over one million residents by 2027.
