Tinubu political-legal and governance challenges
Entities: Bola Tinubu · Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) · Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) · Benjamin Jayeola · Atiku Abubakar
Overview
Since late July 2026 President Bola Tinubu’s administration has faced a widening cascade of legal, security and governance pressures.
A Washington‑based Republican lobbying firm, Von Batten‑Montague‑York, L.C., began pressuring U.S. authorities to consider indicting Tinubu over alleged 1990s heroin trafficking, citing a $460,000 bank‑account seizure in Chicago and thanking Rep. Chris Smith after a House subcommittee hearing. The firm contrasted Tinubu with former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar.
In Nigeria, the Federal High Court in Abuja opened a trial of dozens of serving and retired officers, police, businessmen and civilians accused of plotting a failed 2025 coup. Evidence outlines plans to seize the Presidential Villa (Aso Rock), Radio House, airports and other key sites, with Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji identified as a principal mastermind.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal continued to allege that Tinubu paid “millions of dollars” to northern governors to secure the 2023 APC primary and personally financed large portions of the party’s 2015 campaign, including private jets and U.S. consultants costing over two billion naira. Lawal also claimed Tinubu’s health has deteriorated, noting a diet of bananas and groundnuts and the use of “silk” cigarettes, and said the late President Buhari harboured reservations about Tinubu’s background.
Civil‑society groups intensified calls for investigations. The Ondo State Concerned Youth for Good Governance petitioned the EFCC on 31 July 2026 over alleged diversion of N70 billion from the 2025 OSOPADEC budget. On 1 August 2026 the Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) sent a letter to Tinubu demanding a probe of more than ₦6.79 billion misappropriated within the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs, citing phantom projects, inflated contracts, missing firearms (42) and ammunition (737 rounds), and giving the government seven days to act.
