TNT leakage from WWI shipwreck in North Sea
Overview
Researchers investigating World War I shipwrecks in the North Sea have confirmed that decaying munitions are leaking TNT and its degradation products into the marine environment. The investigation, involving Aarhus University and the Royal Danish Navy, focused on the German submarine SM UC-30, which sank near the Danish island of Rømø in 1917 while carrying 18 mines and six torpedoes.
By analyzing samples collected by navy divers, scientists found traces of TNT in the water column, seabed sediment, and local wildlife, including mussels and starfish. Laboratory analysis indicated that the contamination is linked to cellular stress in marine organisms, such as lower glycogen reserves and increased oxidative stress.
While the pollution is currently considered relatively localized, experts warn that the environmental impact may worsen as the metal hulls and mine casings continue to corrode. This discovery highlights broader concerns regarding thousands of historic shipwrecks in Danish waters that may act as ongoing sources of toxic pollution.
