Overview
Togo is pursuing diverse strategies to expand its national energy capacity and meet rising electricity demand. The government has planned the construction of a 120 MW bifuel thermal power plant in Lomé, supported by the World Bank. This facility is designed to run primarily on natural gas with liquid fuel backup to ensure operational flexibility and address the national electricity deficit.
In addition to thermal power, Togo is exploring nuclear energy as a long-term solution for industrialization and infrastructure development. President Faure Gnassingbé has advocated for the deployment of small modular reactors and microreactors across Africa, calling for improved international financing and regulation. Togo has already established a Commission for Atomic Energy and is scheduled to host the Nuclear Energy Infrastructure and Sustainability Africa conference in 2027.
