Tommaso da Celano cultural commemorations in Abruzzo

Overview

Cultural initiatives in the Abruzzo region of Italy are expanding to honor the legacy of Tommaso da Celano, the first biographer of Saint Francis of Assisi.

In October 2026, the city of Celano will host the ‘Premio Beato Tommaso da Celano’ ceremony at the Municipal Palace. The award recognizes intellectual contributions to the understanding of Saint Francis. Recipients include poet Davide Rondoni, Dr. Marco Villani, theologian Don Luigi Maria Epicoco, and actor Corrado Oddi. This ceremony follows the May 2026 unveiling of a Saint Francis statue in Celano.

Further efforts to promote the historical figure include a new agreement between the Municipality of Celano, the Abruzzo Film Commission Foundation, and DNA S. r. l. to support the international distribution of the film ‘Parola di Tommaso’. Additionally, the theatrical recital ‘Tommaso racconta Tommaso’ is scheduled for October 2026 in Trasacco and Celano as part of the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis.
