Touba hospital infant death investigation
Overview
An investigation is being conducted at Ndamatou Hospital in Touba, Senegal, following the death of a nine-month-old infant on October 2, 2026. The child had been admitted for an asthma attack but reportedly suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after receiving a betamethasone injection.
Autopsy results from Idrissa Pouye Hospital, received on October 9, identified generalized edema, facial swelling, and signs of acute renal and myocardial distress, though no traumatic lesions were found. While the family alleges the medication caused the death, medical examiners stated that findings do not yet establish a direct causal link. Investigators are awaiting toxicological and histopathological analysis from the Fann Hospital anti-poison center to clarify the circumstances.
