Tourism and environmental promotion in Murcia

The Murcia region in southeastern Spain continues to highlight its cultural heritage and natural landscapes to attract visitors. Initial focus has been placed on historic landmarks, such as the Baroque Cathedral of Murcia, the neoclassical Episcopal Palace, and the Las Tres Banderas bridge, alongside the region’s culinary traditions.

Efforts have expanded to include environmental awareness and nature-based tourism. Through the ‘Mochila de actividades’ initiative, the Ministry of Environment, Industry, Universities, Research and Mar Menor is promoting guided routes in Calblanque and the Chícamo River, biodiversity workshops, and programs focused on the loggerhead sea turtle. The region is also emphasizing its geological sites, including Monte Arabí, Gredas de Bolnuevo, Sima de la Higuera, and Capa Negra.

To further these goals, the regional government has launched an innovative tourist map, available in both digital and physical formats. This tool is designed to increase the visibility of local museums, monuments, and gastronomy while supporting sustainable tourism by encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known areas to reduce overcrowding.

Recent initiatives have expanded the focus to include scenic villages and historical sites for travelers seeking to avoid crowded areas. Key destinations include Caravaca de la Cruz, a Holy City featuring medieval architecture and the 17th-century Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz, and Cehegín, recognized as a Rural Wonder of Spain for its Baroque stone landscapes. The region’s diverse geography continues to be a central draw, ranging from river canyons and Arabic fortresses to fertile orchards and limestone terrain.
