Tourism and security challenges in Capri

Capri is experiencing significant challenges related to its tourism industry, encompassing both public safety and environmental concerns.

Following a violent brawl in Marina Grande involving tourists and local merchants, security concerns have intensified. Local officials have debated the adequacy of current measures, with Deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli criticizing the limited number of night patrols. In response, the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, has ordered an intensification of surveillance and control services, including increased checks at landings and embarkation points.

Parallel to these security issues, the island faces systemic pressure from mass tourism. Experts warn that the current model of intensive, seasonal tourism is straining local infrastructure, increasing maritime traffic, and causing environmental damage such as trail erosion and threats to seagrass meadows. For residents, the influx has contributed to a reduction in affordable housing and a shift in local services to cater primarily to high-season visitors.
