Tourism scams in Rio de Janeiro
Overview
Authorities in Rio de Janeiro have taken actions against various forms of tourism-related fraud. Initially, the Civil Police arrested the owner of Latitude Outdoor Adventures, Vitória da Cunha Ferreira Alvim, on suspicion of orchestrating multi-million real travel scams. The agency allegedly used social media to sell domestic and international packages, collecting payments via PIX without providing the promised airfare or accommodations.
Following this, the Civil Police launched a targeted operation through the Special Tourism Support Precinct (Deat) to combat illegal activities near the Christ the Redeemer monument. This operation focuses on unauthorized service providers, including illegal tour guides, ticket scalpers, and unauthorized parking attendants. Reports indicate that suspects in the Cosme Velho and Paineiras regions have used irregular charges and threats to target visitors.
