Tourist deaths in Crete
Overview
Two separate incidents involving elderly tourists have been reported on the island of Crete.
In September, a 78-year-old French tourist was found dead in the sea near Mades Beach, close to Agia Pelagia, following a large-scale search operation involving the Hellenic Coast Guard, divers, and aerial support. The man had been missing since a Friday swim.
In October, a 79-year-old German national died at Komos Beach in the Faistos Municipality. Bystanders and a lifeguard discovered the man unconscious in the water. Despite resuscitation efforts and transport to the Moires Health Center, medical staff confirmed his death. The Red Tower Coast Guard Station has ordered an autopsy to determine if the cause was drowning or other pathological factors.
