Two separate incidents involving aircraft jet blasts occurred at Skiathos Airport within a four-day period in August 2026, both involving Italian tourists. On August 10, a 52-year-old woman sustained severe cranio-cerebral injuries after being struck by the exhaust of an aircraft during takeoff. While observing a commercial aircraft, the intense gust of air caused her to lose her balance and fall violently onto the asphalt. The runway is situated in close proximity to public roads and beaches, such as Xysta, making it a popular location for plane spotters to observe aircraft at low altitudes. Reports indicate that spectators often stand behind a low perimeter wall despite warning signs prohibiting the practice.
