Tourist rescue operations in Greece
Overview
A rescue operation was launched in the Gorgopotamos Gorge near Lamia, Greece, to assist a Polish canyoning group. One member of the group sustained injuries, believed to include fractures, during a descent in a steep area of the gorge. The technical nature of the terrain, which includes numerous waterfalls, made access extremely difficult for the 7th EMAK mountaineering team.
The operation concluded with the successful rescue of the six Polish tourists—four men and two women. The injured individual was transported to Lamia Hospital for medical attention.
In a separate incident in Crete, a 65-year-old German tourist, Thomas Bechert, was also located after being missing for several days. His disappearance had caused concern for his family due to his medical needs, but it was determined that a mobile phone malfunction had prevented him from communicating. He was confirmed to be safe.
