Toxic cough syrup fatalities in Madhya Pradesh
Overview
Reports emerged of child fatalities in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, allegedly caused by the consumption of ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup. Investigations indicated that samples contained 48.6 percent diethylene glycol (DEG), a level significantly higher than the 0.1 percent permissible limit. Initial reports cited 24 deaths involving severe kidney damage and multi-organ failure.
Following these reports, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari accused the state government of corruption and administrative negligence. While initial reports identified 24 deaths, subsequent claims suggested the number of fatalities could reach as high as 100. Patwari demanded impartial investigations into incidents in both Chhindwara and Balaghat, criticizing the lack of regulatory oversight and the reinstatement of a drug inspector during a pending inquiry.
In response to the crisis, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi scheduled a visit to the tribal areas of Balaghat to meet with the families of the deceased.
