Toyota is advancing development of the GR GT, a high-performance supercar designed by its Gazoo Racing division to showcase engineering excellence. The vehicle features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine, with turbochargers positioned between cylinder banks to lower the center of gravity. The powertrain is expected to produce over 641 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. Constructed with an all-aluminum chassis and a body of aluminum and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, the car targets a weight of approximately 1,660 kilograms. The project, which aligns with Chairman Akio Toyoda’s focus on driving passion, prioritizes brand image over direct profitability. Andrew Gilleland, Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations, has described the vehicle as a “passion project” and noted that limited supply is by design to prevent sales to speculators. “We don’t want to sell cars to flippers; we only want people who are going to drive it,” Gilleland stated. Following its presentation during Monterey Car Week, the initial United States allocation—estimated at 200 to 250 units with a starting price of approximately $220,000—has already sold out. Toyota is refining its rollout strategy for a total limited production run of approximately 500 units, implementing a selective owner approval process similar to the Lexus LFA to ensure the cars are driven rather than held as static collections.
