Traditional calligraphy preservation in Turkey
Overview
Traditional Islamic calligraphy, known as Hüsn-i Hat, is seeing renewed interest and preservation efforts across different regions of Turkey.
In Kütahya, instructor Ahmet Türk has been teaching the fundamental rules and techniques of the art form at the Diyanet Youth Center. The program aims to introduce younger generations to the craft through a master-apprentice relationship to ensure its future preservation.
In Van, calligrapher and imam Ahmet Hüsrev Koyuncu is promoting the art through an atelier in the Bedesten Bazaar and his role as President of the Van Ancient Traditional Arts Association. Koyuncu noted that while the art form previously faced public misunderstanding, interest has grown significantly, with many former students now teaching the craft themselves. He is also researching the region's history, noting that Van produced 11 world-renowned calligraphers during the Ottoman era.
