Traffic accidents on the A2 motorway in the Netherlands

Overview

Two separate serious traffic incidents occurred on the A2 motorway in the Netherlands within a week of each other.

On October 3, a single-vehicle accident near the Nieuwegein-Noord exit resulted in a driver being seriously injured. The vehicle struck a lamppost and a tree with enough force to dislodge the engine block, requiring emergency responders and a Mobile Medical Team to extricate the driver.

On October 10, a multi-vehicle collision involving three cars took place near Breukelen on the stretch between Utrecht and Amsterdam. While initial reports from the ANWB suggested the accident may have been caused by a wrong-way driver, police later clarified the cause.

Investigators determined that the driver, traveling from Amsterdam toward Utrecht, suddenly became unwell and lost consciousness. The vehicle crossed the median into the opposing lane, colliding with two other cars. The driver of the initial vehicle died in the crash. One other motorist was injured and hospitalized, while the driver of the third vehicle was uninjured. The incident caused a complete closure of the A2 motorway heading towards Amsterdam for several hours for recovery and investigation.
