Traffic authority impersonation scams in Spain
Overview
Authorities in Spain have issued warnings regarding fraudulent schemes impersonating the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) to steal banking and personal information.
Criminal tactics include ‘smishing’ via SMS, where victims receive fake ‘last reminder’ messages about pending fines to create urgency and direct them to fraudulent payment gateways. Additionally, in Málaga, fraudsters have used ‘qrishing’ by placing fake traffic violation notices under car windshields. These notices, which sometimes contain typographical errors like ‘Jefafura’ instead of ‘Jefatura’, instruct drivers to scan a QR code to pay alleged fines.
The DGT has clarified that it does not send SMS messages containing links for fine payments, noting that official notifications are only sent via postal mail or the official electronic headquarters.
