Traffic disruptions during Durga Puja in India

During the Durga Puja celebrations, major Indian cities have experienced significant transportation challenges. In Bhubaneswar, heavy congestion and gridlock occurred at key intersections due to large crowds visiting pandals, raising concerns about emergency vehicle access. Local police deployed numerous personnel to manage the flow, though residents noted a lack of real-time traffic updates.

In Bhopal, authorities implemented large-scale traffic diversions and route changes to accommodate idol immersion ceremonies. These measures included restricting heavy vehicle entry into the city and limiting the movement of buses and four-wheelers in specific old city areas during scheduled processions. Specific prohibitions were extended to areas including Khajuri Road, Lalghati, and the Airport, with the main procession scheduled to travel from Bharat Talkies through landmarks such as Itwara Chauraha and Mangalwara toward Kamlapati Ghat.

In Hyderabad, the Traffic Police issued an advisory for restrictions effective from 3:00 PM on October 21 until 6:00 AM on October 24. Traffic regulation is centered around Khairatabad, Saifabad, Necklace Road, and Tank Bund. Key junctions, including the VV Statue and Telangana Thalli Flyover, will see regulated movement, with certain routes reserved exclusively for vehicles carrying idols. Commuters have been advised to avoid areas such as Ravindra Bharathi and the BJR Statue Circle to mitigate congestion.
