Transfer status of Joel Ordóñez

Overview

Ecuadorian defender Joel Ordóñez sustained a fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot during an Ecuador-Mexico match in July 2026. The injury initially stalled interest from several major European clubs, including Juventus, Inter Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea, as Club Brugge required further medical examinations before proceeding with any potential transfers.

By late August, Crystal Palace reached an agreement with Club Brugge to sign the defender. The deal was reportedly valued at approximately 30 million euros plus variables, potentially structured as a one-season loan with an obligation to buy. Crystal Palace successfully overtook Aston Villa in negotiations for the player. Club Brugge chairman Bart Verhaeghe noted that the injury impacted the final transfer value, which was roughly 10 million euros lower than the club’s initial target of 40 million euros. Verhaeghe also criticized FIFA and UEFA, arguing that clubs should not bear the full economic risk when international players are injured during major tournaments.

However, the transfer to Crystal Palace collapsed following medical examinations. While the metatarsal injury was previously known, medical assessments revealed concerns regarding Ordóñez’s recovery. Crystal Palace officials determined that his rehabilitation would take longer than expected, posing a sporting risk for a club seeking immediate defensive reinforcements. As a result, the club decided not to proceed with the operation, and Ordóñez will remain with Club Brugge.

Ordóñez later clarified via social media that the injury actually originated from a heavy blow during a Belgian Pro League match on May 17. He stated that what began as a tear in the navicular bone evolved into a fracture due to continued play while he was managing discomfort. He noted that he has spent much of his recent break using crutches and expects several more months of recovery before returning to full competition.
