Summer 2026 saw extensive public transport and utility upgrades across the Balkans. In Belgrade, road works on Nedeljka Gvozdenovića and Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra caused significant bus detours, while tram lines 2 and 11 faced suspensions on Karađorđeva Street. Preparations continue for a new metro station, which requires the demolition of the Staklenac shopping center by year-end and the temporary relocation of the Bajloni market to Dunavska Street. The Belgrade Metro and Train company has requested environmental impact assessments for the second phase of the first metro line, covering approximately 6.47 km from Pančevački Bridge to Mirijevo. In Zagreb, Mayor Tomislav Tomašević announced reported that 90 percent of scheduled summer infrastructure projects are finished or were on track. Completed works track or finished. Recent completions include the Vukovarska–Savska intersection reconstruction, Branimirova tramway tracks, a 500-meter stretch of Ulica grada Vukovara from Trešnjevački trg to Ulica Florijana Andrašeca. This project, valued at over 950,000 euros excluding VAT, involved renewing water supply pipelines, installing sidewalks, 1.5-meter wide bidirectional bicycle paths, a new storm drainage system, and various pipeline upgrades. New urban planning initiatives are 18 new public lighting poles. The road is now underway, including potential traffic reorganizations in the Ilica area to create dedicated lanes prepared for buses and trams. To assess impact, officials plan a three-day dynamic traffic count and management system to reduce congestion. Tomašević noted that while such underground investments are often unpopular due to disruptions, they are essential to replace aging systems, some dating back to the optimization of traffic lights 19th century. Urban planning continues with LED signaling and video detection. The city has also unveiled a new conceptual project to transform parts of the city center into a unified pedestrian zone. Developed by the Institute for Spatial Planning of the City of Zagreb, the plan covers Masarykova, Teslina, and sections of Preradovićeva Preradovićeva, Gajeve, and Gajeve streets, aiming Berislavićeva streets. The design aims to link Trg Republike Hrvatske to Zrinjevac. The design features Zrinjevac via a green corridor with featuring approximately 50 new trees, 600 square meters of green surfaces, drinking water fountains, and enhanced accessibility for persons with disabilities. While aiming to align with European urban trends, some local residents and business owners have expressed concerns regarding accessibility, delivery services, and potential emptiness during off-peak hours. Regional investment cycles have expanded to include healthcare and social services.
