The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has arrested the primary leader of a transnational drug trafficking organization in the Portalegre district. The suspect had been a fugitive for approximately 13 months. months and is currently in preventive detention. The arrest concludes a three-year investigation conducted in cooperation with Spain’s Guardia Civil. This follows a large-scale crackdown in July 2025 that dismantled the group’s logistical structure and resulted in the detention of 49 individuals across Portugal and Spain. During the broader investigation, authorities reported massive seizures, including seven tons of hashish, 650 kilograms of cocaine, 18 high-speed boats, 40 high-power engines, 780,000 euros in cash, 11 firearms, and 24 vehicles. The GNR stated that this latest arrest has “successfully neutralized the entire command chain of the criminal organization.”
