Transnistria regional security and influence tensions
Overview
Concerns have intensified regarding Russian influence and the militarization of youth in the Transnistrian region. A report by the human rights organization Promo-LEX detailed activities between July and September 2026 where minors participated in military training, such as drone usage and grenade throwing, organized by the Black Sea Cossack Host. The report also noted the introduction of Russian history textbooks and ideological indoctrination aimed at distancing the region from Moldova.
In response to these developments, Moldova has engaged in diplomatic efforts through the OSCE. Moldovan Ambassador Victoria Roșa rejected Russian claims of an economic blockade, noting that the majority of regional exports are directed toward the European Union. Moldova has formally called for the “complete and unconditional withdrawal” of Russian troops, equipment, and ammunition from its territory, while raising further human rights concerns regarding arbitrary detentions and restrictions on freedom of expression within Transnistria.
