Transnordestina railway construction in Brazil and feasibility studies

The Transnordestina railway project, a 1,206-kilometer logistics corridor intended to connect southern Piauí to the Port of Pecém in Ceará, is progressing toward its completion goal of late 2027. As of September 2026, the project had reached 83% execution, with R$ 11 billion of the estimated R$ 15 billion total investment allocated. The infrastructure is stimulating private sector interest, including plans for approximately ten private terminals for commodities such as grains, limestone, gypsum, and fuels, as well as a R$ 200 million investment by Masterboi for a slaughterhouse in Iguatu. By late September 2026, the project reached 84% completion in its first phase. This included the addition of 50 kilometers of tracks between Quixeramobim and Quixadá, bringing the total constructed length to 832 kilometers. Transnordestina Logística S.A. (TLSA), a subsidiary of the CSN Group, continues to manage the construction of the corridor. In late September 2026, a technical, economic, and environmental feasibility study regarding the interconnection of the Porto-Indústria Verde in Caiçara do Norte with the Transnordestina railway was announced. The study, expected to be completed in December, is a partnership between the Rio Grande do Norte State Secretariat of Planning, Budget, and Management (Seplan/RN) and the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene). Coordinated by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and the United Nations Development Programme (PNUD), the study aims to establish a definitive route, technical characteristics, and investment estimates for a potential link via Mossoró, Apodi, and Pau dos Ferros to Iguatu, Ceará. In October 2026, Infra S.A. announced it expects to complete feasibility studies for the Pernambuco section of the railway by the end of the year.
