Traumatic brain injury cases in Vietnam

Overview

Medical facilities in Vietnam have treated several cases of severe traumatic brain injuries involving different causes and demographics.

In one instance, a 27-month-old girl from Phu Tho required emergency surgery at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases after a fall resulted in an epidural hematoma and a fractured occipital bone. Following the removal of a hematoma in the posterior fossa, her motor and cognitive functions reportedly returned to normal.

Other reported incidents include a 40-year-old woman in Hanoi who survived a motorcycle collision with a container truck. The accident caused an open traumatic brain injury with brain tissue protruding through a 12 cm wound, requiring a five-hour surgical procedure to stabilize. Additionally, a 21-month-old child died at the National Children's Hospital following a brain injury sustained while standing on an electric motorbike.
