Trentino tunnel stabilization works

In late July 2026 the Province of Trento announced a 1‑year‑and‑4‑month stabilization programme for the Galleria Dom tunnel on the SS240 between Valle di Ledro and Alto Garda. The €4.10 million project, set to begin between September and October 2026, will involve cement‑based roof injections, a stainless‑steel mesh lining and the installation of about 600 tie‑rods. Traffic will be limited to night‑time closures for the first five months and then to a single‑direction alternating flow for the remainder of the year, with exemptions for emergency vehicles and seasonal work pauses.

A few days later reports highlighted the practical impact of the closures: roughly 1,500 daily commuters between Val di Ledro and Basso Sarca are facing longer travel times, higher fuel costs and uncertainty. Local industry representatives have urged regional authorities to provide emergency measures such as shuttle lanes, expense compensation and temporary housing for shift workers. At the same time, the nearby Monte Piazzo Tunnel has been identified for urgent structural reinforcement, underscoring the ongoing balance between safety requirements and the Trentino region’s dependence on reliable mountain‑pass transport for commerce and tourism.
