Tricycle rider sentenced for migrant smuggling in Ghana

Overview

A Nigerien tricycle rider, Mustapha Usman, was sentenced to seven months in prison by the Denu Circuit Court for facilitating the illegal entry of four Nigerien migrants into Ghana.

Usman pleaded guilty to charges of migrant smuggling and causing a false representation. The prosecution stated that Usman, a resident of Togo, was hired to transport the migrants from Lomé to the Aflao border area for a fee of GHS200 per person. To bypass immigration checks, the migrants were concealed in the bucket of the tricycle and covered to appear empty. The operation was intercepted by the Ghana Immigration Service Aflao Sector Command. The four migrants involved have been repatriated, while an accomplice known as Remy remains at large.
