The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intervened to resolve a dispute between two factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the party’s name and its ‘Joraphool’ (twin flowers) election symbol. On September 12, a five-member delegation from the rebel faction, led by West Bengal Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, met with the ECI scheduled meetings in New Delhi with delegations from both Delhi. This group, which includes Akhruzzaman, Arup Roy, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Riju Datta, is seeking official recognition as the legitimate leadership of the party. The rebel faction led by Ritabrata reportedly consists of approximately 60 of the 80 newly elected TMC MLAs who distanced themselves from Mamata Banerjee following the party’s defeat to the BJP in the April Assembly polls.
