The Election Commission of India (ECI) has finalized interim arrangements for the rival factions of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) following its decision to freeze the original party name and the ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol. This measure was implemented to manage the leadership dispute ahead of the Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly bypolls. Under the interim order, the Mamata Banerjee-led faction has been allotted the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘Football Player’ symbol. The rival faction, identified as being led by Ritabrata Banerjee and Arup Roy, has been assigned the name ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘Envelope’ symbol. Both groups will be recognized as political parties in West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Tripura for the duration of these elections. Mamata Banerjee has challenged the decision in the Supreme Court, describing the move as ‘unconstitutional, illegal, and undemocratic.’ The Supreme Court has issued directives to resolve the dispute, ordering the ECI to reach a final decision within four months. To facilitate this, the rival factions must submit all pleadings and documents within four weeks, after which the Commission will have three months to conclude the matter regarding the party name and the ‘flowers and grass’ symbol.
