Following negotiations in New Delhi involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formalized an alliance with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections. Chief Minister Manik Saha has officially announced the alliance, which will contest the elections for 587 village committees scheduled for September 28. During public meetings, Saha criticized the Congress-CPI(M) opposition, accusing them of attempting to create a ‘divide-and-rule’ situation and expressing confidence in an NDA victory. However, the election cycle has been marked by allegations of misconduct. Former Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar has alleged that workers from the BJP, IPFT, and TMP are intimidating CPI(M) candidates. Sarkar claimed that some prospective candidates faced pressure or threats of “eviction and arson” to force the withdrawal of their nominations before the deadline. As the election process progresses, the TIPRA Motha Party has secured 1,148 village committee seats unopposed, representing approximately 25 percent of the 4,597 total available seats. State Election Commissioner PK Chakraborty reported that 10,958 nomination papers were submitted, with 10,936 candidates set to contest the remaining seats following the conclusion of the nomination process on September 8. To maintain security, the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the deployment of 74 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Vote counting is scheduled for October 5.
