On 20 July 2026 Tripura’s Director General of Police, Police Anurag Dhankar, Dhankar was found dead in a washroom at the state police headquarters in Agartala. The state observed a day of mourning, lowered the national flag to half‑mast and named ADGP G.S. Rao as acting DGP. A three‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak was constituted formed on 24 July to file weekly progress reports, collect evidence and determine whether foul play was involved.
