Truck accidents and spills on São Paulo highways

Overview

A series of truck accidents involving cargo and hazardous materials has been reported on highways in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

In late September, two separate incidents occurred: a truck carrying hamburgers overturned in Itu, and a semi-trailer carrying diesel fuel overturned in Itapetininga. In the latter case, rescue teams contained a partial fuel spill, and Cetesb was called to manage environmental measures.

In mid-October, a collision between two heavy cargo trucks on the Régis Bittencourt Highway near Cajati resulted in a significant spill of approximately 500 liters of butyl glycol, described as a “toxic organic liquid”. The accident caused lane closures and traffic jams of roughly 15 kilometers. Emergency responders and Cetesb worked to isolate the area, and the highway was eventually reopened after the damaged containers were transferred and debris was cleared. No injuries or soil contamination were reported in this incident.
