Truecaller service expansions in India
Overview
Truecaller has introduced new tools and applications aimed at enhancing user security and accessibility in India. In late September, the company launched ‘Scam Checker’, a free web and Android tool designed to identify fraudulent phone numbers, URLs, and text messages by cross-referencing data against proprietary risk databases and crowdsourced scam forums.
Following this, in late October, the company released ‘Truecaller Lite’, a standalone application optimized for budget Android devices with limited storage and RAM. While the Lite version omits features like in-app messaging and AI assistants to maintain a small 10MB footprint, it retains core functionalities including caller identification and spam blocking. The release of the Lite app was timed to coincide with India’s festive shopping season to combat an increase in fraudulent communications.
