Trump's Iran pressure campaign

In late July 2026 President Trump continued to press Iran while linking the issue to broader diplomatic moves. On 23 July he told an EPA audience that the United States would keep “strong pressure” on Tehran, calling the regime “malicious,” saying it was not yet ready for a nuclear weapon, and promising that the same treatment would continue. In the same remarks he announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping would visit Washington on 24 September for high‑level AI cooperation, with Trump asserting a U.S. lead in the AI race.

Two days later, after Iran accused the United States of striking its humanitarian rescue vessels Naji‑15 and Naji‑16 in the Hormozgan Strait, Trump said the U.S. was weighing additional strikes and a possible new agreement with Tehran, citing intelligence that Supreme Leader Maj‑id Khamenei was advancing a nuclear programme. He also confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would travel to Washington for talks, and reiterated that Russia and China had pledged not to sell weapons to Iran. At a White House journalists’ dinner Trump announced his intention to run for a third term in 2028, keeping Iran’s nuclear ambitions a central foreign‑policy focus.

These statements show an expanding Trump‑led effort to isolate Iran, now intertwined with AI diplomacy with China, a potential escalation of military pressure, and the planned Israel‑U.S. engagement.
