The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched a pilot program titled ‘Gateside by TSA PreCheck’. This initiative allows eligible non-travelers with an active TSA PreCheck membership or other qualifying trusted-traveler program to access secure, post-security airport gates. This revives a practice that was largely discontinued following the September 11 attacks. Participants must apply online via Login.gov one to three days in advance. Once approved, visitors can use TSA PreCheck lanes with valid identification and must present a live approval on a mobile device; screenshots or printouts are not accepted. The free, one-day pass allows for multiple entries, and any accompanying children must be included in the initial registration. Initially rolled out at 13 U.S. airports—including Los Angeles International, Dallas-Fort Worth International, Harry Reid International, and Salt Lake City International—the program has since expanded to more than 300 airports. Some locations, such as Syracuse Hancock International Airport, may implement daily limits, such as 75 passes per day. However, the TSA has indefinitely suspended the expansion of the Gateside program. While the program was recently listed as available at hundreds of airports, the TSA has informed airports that the expansion is on hold, leaving only the original 13 pilot locations active. These include Dallas–Fort Worth, Detroit, Omaha, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Columbus, Los Angeles, Little Rock, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Wichita, The TSA has scaled back the rollout to an “operational assessment phase” at the original 13 locations to evaluate participation levels and Oklahoma City. operational impacts. Reports indicate the suspension follows implementation issues, such as at Dallas–Fort Worth, where approved visitors were turned away because checkpoint staff had not received training or could not locate approvals in the system. The TSA has not provided a reason for the suspension or a timeline for resuming the expansion.
